Speed is Now Live in Google's Algorithm
Speed is Now Live in Google's Algorithm

As of April 9th 2010 Google has now added speed as a ranking factor in their algorithm. With over 200 different factors in Google's algorithm site speed now becomes one of them.

Google has added site speed as a factor because they consider the load time of a website as very important. Through their testing they say that "faster sites create happy users". Faster sites improve the user’s experience.

Google has gone on to say that less than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal, and that site speed doesn’t carry nearly the weight as relevance.

Google makes the following suggestions on how to improve your website's speed: choose a fast reliable web hosting company, combine external JavaScript and CSS files and compress your code, minimize the usage of images and compress your images.

Webmaster tools to help evaluate website speed:

  • Page Speed
  • YSlow
  • WebPagetest
  • Check in Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world as in the chart below. We've also blogged about site performance.

I love that this was added, sometimes I search click and nothing, come back the next day and same thing. If the host is too slow it's time to get out of there.

Very good idea it's frustrating when you try to get to a website and their response is slowwwwwww.

I've been using PageSpeed for some time now and recommend it.
